The Arabic calendar or Islamic calendar

Arabic calendar or Islamic Calendar is a Lunar calander used to observe the Muslim holidays and festivals, such as Ramadan the Muslim Holy month, and Lilato'l Qadr ( the night known as: 'a night better than a thousand months') ...etc.

As I told you in the beginning, the Arabic/Islamic calendar is also called Hijrah or Hijri calendar, and there is a reson for that.

After the Prophet Mohammed died, the Muslim Khalifa (leader) Omar Ibn Al Khttab realized that, with the spread of Islam, there is a need for a special calendar to observe the Muslim times and events....

The result was this Arabic Islamic calendar.

It was called Hijrah or Hijri calendar (Hijrah is an Arabic word that means: immigration) because, it starts with the year that the Prophet Mohammed immigrated from Mecca to Maddina.

This Arabic calendar or the Islamic calendar is a 12 months lunar one, with approximately 354 days; the month is either 29 or 30 days. The difference between this calendar and the Gregorian is approx. 11 days.

Here are the Islamic months of the Arabic or Islamic calendar and how to pronounce them properly:

التقويم الهجري

  1. Muharrum محرم
  2. Safar صفر
  3. Rabi' al-awwal ربيع الأول (al-awwal means: the first).
  4. Rabi' al-thani ربيع الثاني (al-thani means: the second).
  5. Jumada al-awwal جمادي الأول
  6. Jumada al-thani جمادي الثاني
  7. Rajab رجب
  8. Sha'ban شعبان
  9. Ramadan رمضان (this is the holy month)
  10. Shawwal شوال
  11. Dhu al-Qidah ذو القعده
  12. Dhu al hijja ذو الحجه

The last and most important thing to know about the Arabic calendar or the Islamic calendar ( and let's call it Hijri calendar from now on) is, how to match it with the Gregorian western calendar?

The answer is:

24th of April 2009 AD = 28th Rabi' al-awwal 1430 H (Hijri)
