Final Notes

=============

Before we finish talking about Arabic food, I want you to know how to pronounce two letters in Arabic, the letter G and the letter R ... you should know that, and it is easy.

  1. Pronouncing the letter G ج

  2. ================

    When talking about Arabic food or middle eastern food (and when you are speaking Arabic in general), please note the difference in pronunciation for the letter G between Egypt and other Arab countries :

    In Egypt, the letter G is pronounced as the G in Glass. In other Arab countries it is pronounced as the J in John.

    You can use both, they will understand you.

    Example:

    The Arabic word for Cup is: فنجان

    This word is pronounced Fingan in Egypt and Sudan, and Finjan in other Arab countries.

  3. Pronouncing the letter R ر

  4. ================

    Another important thing in Arabic pronunciation I want you to be aware of, is the letter R , you have to utter it clearly, do not minimize it like in English, or change it like in French.

    Example:

    If you are in an Arabic or middle eastern restaurant and you want to order soup, you will ask for 'shorba'.

    Shorba, means Soup...... شوربه shoRba (with a clear R please).

    Forn, means Oven....... فرن foRn (clear R please).

      It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with The Arabic Alphabet.

      All the best
